I wanted to visit Greece and so addressed the closest travel agency with the request to arrange me nice holidays in Greece. I left my contact details, money and documents - let them deal with all necessary preparations... my task was to enjoy the service I pay for and enjoy the trip.
Now I understand how much naive I was!
I was called one day and informed that everything has been arranged and ready, I was to take off in 2 days.
I was happy like a child when getting a so much expected present for Christmas. I arrived to Athens and from there I was to get to the island. The name of the Island gave me no idea of what I should expect I remember that Myconos was the centre of civilization, that many myths and legends mention this island. I was somehow glad that I will not be bored and will be able to spend time in sightseeing and roaming about the historical places.
Thus I started my trip full of hopes and expectations of wonderful holiday. The manager of the travel company told me that Myconos is a stone's throw from Athens, ferries are circulating there and back with 'zing' sound like rockets. Well, this stone's throw took me 7 hours on an old vessel in a company with Greek old women with unshaven cheeks and their thievish grandchildren that would never pass the face-control at a more-or-less respectable supermarket. The ferry was stopping at every corner, so to say. The captain sometimes forgot to announce the Islands we were mooring to, which resulted in wasting 2 hours when we had to move backwards to land 2 tens of Germans. Luckily, my Island was the next and I could land with no further prolongations. I looked around a feeling that I was already here I definitely saw that house, that church and this boat at the berth. I saw them I definitely saw them Suddenly I recollected in my mind - I saw them thousands times in my life, such pictures are hanging on the walls of every travel agency, are placed in many journals illustrating the paradise and used in many video-clips. The feeling "I have already been here" is experienced by everyone landing Myconos as well as the oath I will undoubtedly return here is pronounced by everyone departing from the island.
If you do not like New Year parties, wild dances and festivals of the youth and students, you will not definitely like the Tuesdays in Myconos. It is like all parents left the island on cruise boats and the next series of "Home alone" movie start - the universal randan captured.
Greeks hided in their houses, only taxi-drivers, waiters and gigolos pursue challenges outside.
But the others! The city turned into one big party and like it happens during parties - people wished to move. "Paradise! Paradise!" the crowd starts chanting, immediately busses appear from nowhere and the everybody goes to another part of the Island.
It is useless to describe the night on Paradise beach - you can find plenty of photos on the web. I can only say that this is that very unique place where on one of the ten best beaches in the world one of the best and famous bars in the world is. You will not find it either in Miami or in Sydney or in Honolulu. You will find it in Myconos. 28 inches tall dwarf Jimmy is running on the bar counter and drinks everything he manages to catch.
There 2 swarthy topless girls are throwing the dirty dishes to the kitchen above the guests heads. Naked people burst in only to take martini and to rush back to the sea full of love.
Certainly, Myconos boasts plenty of calm and quiet places. There are gay-beaches and non-gay-beaches, but in general it is all the same for the others who you are, with whom you are and where you come from. You are having fun - so you are one of us, so see you next year!
